Another Pineapple Scarf

Tonight I finished another Pineapple Scarf . I've been working on this one between other projects. The yarn I used was some bargain yarn I picked up somewhere and it's probably close to sport weight; the label didn't give a weight or gauge on it. Anyway, here's the picture:

The pattern is Pineapples designed by Elizabeth Ann White in the book Quick and Easy Scarves  from Annies Attic. I think I prefer this scarf made out of the heavier yarn but this is okay too.

My aunt passed away on Thanksgiving. I wish I would have had a chance to see her but at least her children were very supportive and there for her. My family has a tendency to die during the holiday season so I will be very thankful when this one is over.

Have a great week everyone!

Hat for Son Matt

I made my son Matthew a hat. He works outdoors and for some reason, he can't keep track of his hats. I love this pattern, the only thing I need to work on is how I seam up the back because it looks a little weird. Here it is:

I had to upgrade my picasa account to fit this picture in. So, to be economical, I'll put small pictures here that are clickable.

Have a great weekend and thanks for looking.

Thanks for visiting!

Another Hat & Scarf Set Plus Slippers

I made another hat and scarf set. This time I used some homespun yarn that I got on clearance because the label was missing. I thought it was off-white or cream color but in some lighting it looks more yellow. Guess it will be ok. These are for a Christmas gift.  Here's the set--

  • Hat pattern is here.
  • Scarf pattern is here.
Both patterns are from Lion Brand site and for some reason whenever I make their patterns, my gauge is really off and I have to downsize my hooks. So note to self: Check gauge!

Here are the slippers I made after I said I was finished making slippers for a while. :)

Thanks for stopping in. Y'all are very much appreciated. Hope you're having a great weekend.

Hat to Match Pineapple Scarf

After making this scarf:

I decided to make a hat to match because I had a lot of matching yarn. I thought that since the scarf was a little fancy that a plain hat would be best. I used this pattern without the flower. I should have checked my gauge in the beginning because after I finished the hat, it resembled this guys rainhat:

So, I frogged the entire thing and crocheted it again. I think it turned out pretty well. Here it is:

So, to sum up the changes I used in making this pattern-- I omitted the flower, downsized the hooks I used by 2 sizes and I used Lion Suede yarn instead of Homespun. This set is going to a special person for a Christmas present. I think she'll like it (fingers crossed).

Thanks for visiting.

ps--an update on my friend in the hospital. He is hoping to come home Monday. My husband talked with him today and he sounds much better. Thanks to all of you for your prayers.

It's a Scarf!

I finally made something besides slippers. I made this beautiful scarf from Annie's Attic Quick & Easy Scarves. The name of the pattern is Pineapples designed by Elizabeth Ann White. The pattern called for a light weight yarn (3), but I used Lion Suede, a bulky (5) weight yarn. I made a few less pineapple repetitions so it wouldn't be hanging below the knees when worn. I highly recommend this pattern. I never made anything with a pineapple design before and this pattern was extremely user friendly.

Thanks for looking!

ps--I have a confession to make, I started another pair of slippers last night.

Last Pair of Slippers for a While

We had a friend going into the hospital today, so I  made him a pair of slippers too. He had a tumor on his bladder and when he was opened up this morning, they discovered his prostate also had cancer and both were removed. If you wouldn't mind, he could use our prayers. Thanks everyone.

Husband Finished His Chores

A week ago our combination microwave and exhaust vent died. Since this is the 2nd one we've been through we decided to get an "old fashioned" counter top microwave and the traditional range vent hood. After removing the old microwave, we noticed our tile back splash had been tiled around the bottom edge of the old microwave and  we had to put something there that would coordinate/complement the old. I walked into the kitchen a few minutes ago and saw that Ray finally finished up the back splash  The new vent is great too; the bottom is sealed and cleanup is a snap. Here's the new look:

Husband told me to let you know that the kitchen is not crooked, my photography is! Take care...

Finished Object Friday (09 November 2012)

Yes, it's more slippers. I finally made a pair for a gentleman on my Christmas list, but there are three more pairs for the ladies on my list. I really have to get moving on  making the other things on my Christmas list. I don't know why I'm so addicted to making these slippers lately. I have more ladies pairs made than I really need. Although, sometimes I'll give spontaneous gifts of them away. I'm just rambling on here. Here's the pictures:

Ladies made of variegated and navy yarns

Ladies made of brown, rust and coral yarns (left overs)
I'll probably wear these

Yes, I'm Still on My Slipper Kick!

Ta Da! Two more pairs of slippers for some lucky ladies. You probably already know where to find the pattern for these but just in case, here's the link for it. I've been bad about starting projects lately and turning them into forgotten ufos. I keep going back to making these slippers. I was going over this years projects, and these 2 pairs of slippers brought the total number of pairs of slippers to 30 made this year! I'm going to warm up a bunch of tootsies this winter!

Have a great week everyone!

7 More Pairs of Slippers

It's me again. Lots still going on. I'm still going to a lot of appointments for me and family members. I had bullied my mil into having her 1st colonoscopy and it ended up abnormal--she had some precancerous polyps removed and then had to go to the University of Louisville Hospital to see a "specialist's specialist" as she refers to him. She had some other "spots" removed and will have to go back from time to time to have other exams and procedures done. These spots are viral and not cancer.

My son had a growth on the top of his head. It resembled a flesh colored gumball. We took him to have it removed and the Lord was looking out for our family again it wasn't cancerous. My son's primary care practitioner had us very worried because she said it looked cancerous.

I've had more appointments than I care to count lately. I had a bone density test done and my bones are porous--not quite osteoporosis, but osteopenia.  My bones are 25% less dense than a young person. I'd been taking calcium prescribed by my primary care provider but after a visit to a dietitian  I learned that I should be taking a chewable calcium citrate and NOT calcium carbonate as prescribed. For women who have had gastric bypass surgery, please take calcium and make sure it is the correct type of calcium! This week, I finished having the 2nd root canal in 2 months (a total of 4 in the last 2 years) and my dental problems are likely due to not taking the correct calcium. I need to get permanent fillings in the teeth that have had root canals and crowns on them too so I still have more dental work to be done. For all middle-age women, it is a good idea to check with your doctor about calcium supplements.

I'm also going to doctors for my VA disability. Out of pride, I didn't pursue it for many years and now that I'm older and my service connected health issues are well, I guess you can say becoming issues I'm pursuing care for them. More on this on some later date.

Here are 7 more pairs of slippers I made this month. I'm using up odds and ends of left over yarn and single skeins I have on hand. Here they are:

A Scarf & 3 Pairs of Slippers

Lots going on here. Been to numerous appointments with doctors and dentists for me, appointments with mil for abnormal colonoscopy and appointments with son for abnormal growth on the top of his head. All of this going on with no sight in end for at least a month. Geez, I'm a hermit at heart and all this going has me yearning for some uninterrupted home time. Anywho, here are a few projects that I've recently finished--

Pattern for slippers is here.  A couple pairs I made the cuff shorter because I wanted to be sure I had enough yarn since they were made from left over yarn.

No pattern for this; I just winged it.

That's all for now. Thanks for visiting!

Hugs, Sharon

I May Be Off the Slipper Obsesson...

I have found a pattern for dishcloths that I like very much at least with multicolored yarn. The pattern is on this page. I used the alternate stitch dishcloth pattern. When I started the dishcloth in the multi-brown color, I didn't like it but as it progressed, I fell in love with the color. Here's pictures of the 2 dishcloths I made yesterday.

Feeling somewhat better. I had my thyroid meds adjusted, finally got prescribed something for the chronic leg/foot cramps I get and I'm back on antidepressants. All together, I'm on 13 medications! I'm turning into my grandmother with her shoe box of medications. Okay, I promised myself that I wouldn't become a complainer so that's enough on this subject.

I hope y'all are having a wonderful weekend. I'm enjoying the cooler (but not cold) temperatures and wishing it would stay like this for a long time. Have a great week.

Hugs to all...

I'm Still Here...

I mentioned in my last post that I was getting used to some new medications and that's why I haven't been around much. I am feeling so much better but my concentration is still very short. Anyway, I seem to be obsessed with making slippers. Several wips have become ufos as I churn out some more slippers for me and the gift drawer. Here's a slide show look at the ones I've made so far:

Thanks for coming back and not forgetting me. You are all very much appreciated and I enjoy visiting your blogs too.

I Know I've Been Absent from Here

Lots going on. I've started on some new medications and it's taking me a while to get used to them. Also have a problem tooth that I'm getting a root canal finished tomorrow. Anyway, I thought I would show you some pictures of 2 scarves I made. I made these a while ago but wasn't able to post pictures of until today when they arrived at their destination. Here they are--

.
Both scarves are made of single crochets worked in long rows. The first scarve is worked in back loops only and the 2nd scarf is plain ol' single crochets. There were no ends to weave in because I incorporated them into the fringe so these were easy peasy to make.

A Funny Bone Tickler

Saw this on fb and had to share with you.

Not much is going on here. I'm stumped on the vest I've been working on forever. The problem is  that I am at a part where I have to think and pay attention to what I'm doing. I did make a quick pair of slippers to try and get my crochet mojo back but I haven't taken a picture of them yet.

I had my eyes examined yesterday and ordered glasses from Zenni Optical. The frames are stylish and for a pair of glasses with no line bifocals and poly carbonate lenses PLUS a pair of no line bifocal sunglasses I spent $113.80 total price. I've never had prescription sunglasses before and I'm breaking down and getting some because I'm tired of squinting when I drive. When the glasses come in I'll let you see them and give a review.

Okay, that's it for now.

Address To The Moon
How sweet the silver Moon’s pale ray,
Falls trembling on the distant bay,
O’er which the breezes sigh no more,
Nor billows lash the sounding shore.
Say, do the eyes of those I love,
Lonely, majestic and serene,
The calm and placid evening’s Queen?
Say, if upon thy peaceful breast,
Departed spirits find their rest,
For who would wish a fairer home,
Than in that bright, refulgent dome?

Kentucky State Fair Visit

Note: I originally posted this on Friday but ended up with the wrong video. So sorry about that!!! I was having lots of difficulty posting then and now I ended up using IE browser instead of
Chrome because Chrome wouldn't let me change the video! Thanks go to Debi for pointing out that I posted the wrong video.

On Thursday, hubs and I went to the state fair in Louisville, Kentucky. I've only been to 2 state fairs in my life. The first was the Illinois State Fair when I was a teenager and the other was when we were stationed in Hawaii in the early 90s. This fair was a bit different. The others were outdoors in the open air and tents and this one was indoors in an exposition center with some vendors outdoors. It was comfortable to be able to walk around in an air conditioned space. Taking pictures was a problem due to horrible lighting, using flash used up my battery fast and then I ended up taking many pictures with my cell. Also, glass display cases reflected the light and the best I could do in many instances was to stand at a less than optimal angle to move the reflection to a less important place. I was surprised at the lack of crocheted items. There was a display of doilies and one afghan was in the 4-H room. I totally enjoyed myself anyway and I took beaucoup pictures and put them to some Stephen Foster music. I know this is quite long but the music is worthwhile to listen to. We spent almost 5 hours there and were totally worn out by the time we left. We missed seeing some of the animals but did see all of the nifty crafty things. I hope you enjoy this and that it isn't too long for you.

Note: Sometimes my blog will have music playing (usually Christmas time) and you can scroll down the column on your right to turn off the music player to hear the audio on the video better.

Yarn Clippings Upcycled

I have been saving the yarn clippings that are left after weaving in ends. Some of them I toss outside for the birds to use in building their nests and the bulk of them I stuffed in this clear glass vase. They help to hold the artificial flowers in place and at the same time hide the stems.

Not much going on in my crochet world. I haven't done anything on the vest I'm making since the last time I posted a picture. I've had some appointments with the doctor--nothing wrong, just routine visits that I've procrastinated about and now I have quite a few appointments and procedures to go to. Next week I'm going to have my eyes examined at Walmart and I'm taking my prescription to Sears where a special is going on for 2 pairs of glasses for $99.99 and they include no-line bifocals! That's only $9.99 more than I paid for my 1 pair of "free" glasses from the VA a few years ago. The reason my free pair of glasses cost $90 was because I chose the option of having no-line bifocals. At the VA, there were only a few pairs of glasses to choose from too. If it's not too much additional cost, I'm going to see about having one pair of glasses tinted like sunglasses. I'll decide about the sunglasses after they quote me a price. Sears does not accept my insurance (Tricare--military insurance) and that's why I have to have my exam done elsewhere. Take care everyone and have a great week!.

There are many many disable veterans out there who need assistance. The Disabled American Veterans offer help free of charge. Bernat Giveaway

Bernat is having a giveaway. I just wanted to let you know about it. No, I don't get extra entries for letting you know or anything. I just want to see someone I "know" win one of these big company giveaways.  What are you waiting for--Go HERE!

I know the picture doesn't go with this post but I saw this recently and just decided to share it for the heck of it. This is Opi before he started turning gray and looking like a raccoon. He's wearing his bathrobe and kicking back in the little rocker.

Vest Status

Today's update on the vest--

One thing I've found strange about this pattern is that the shaping around the arm opening is uneven. It starts on one row for the one side and then starts on the next row for the other side. I read the pattern several times and I didn't misread it. Should be interesting to see the finished object. So far this is an easy pattern and I think if there are any problems making it, then the collar maybe a bit more challenging. I'll just have to wait and see. (Pattern info: Kim Biddix, “Lace-Collared Vest,” Crochet! July 2007, 38-40, 89-90.)

For attractive lips,
Speak words of kindness.
For lovely eyes,
Seek out the good in people.
For a slim figure,
Share your food with the hungry.
For beautiful hair,
Let a child run his or her fingers
through it once a day.
For poise,
Walk with the knowledge you'll
never walk alone.

Ladies Lace-Collared Vest--A WIP

Remember how I was talking not long ago about making a wearable for  me? The more patterns I looked at the more I realized that even though I have a very large stash of yarn, it seems that I didn't have enough of one color that I liked to have a sweater made out of. Soooo, digging through some more patterns, I decided to make a vest. Here's the pattern I chose--

Pattern info: Kim Biddix, “Lace-Collared Vest,” Crochet! July 2007, 38-40, 89-90.

I started working on it last night and I finished about 1/2 of the back. So far it looks like a big rectangle.

The yarn I'm using is a Red Heart Super Saver yarn. The color  is a light sage tweed and it is named "frosty green fleck." I'm hoping by posting pictures this soon into it, that I'll keep motivated to finish it especially if I hit a problem or 2. I think I should have chained 2 instead of 3 when starting new rows; I'll do that on the front pieces. As long as this turns out, I think it will look great with a pair of jeans when the weather gets chilly.

All that we have and are is one of the
unique and never-to-be-repeated ways God
has chosen to express Himself in space and
time. Each of us, made in His image and
likeness, is yet another promise He has
made to the universe that He will continue
to love it and care for it.

It's a Pencil, It's a Scarf...

I saw a scarf made from this pattern a looong time ago and it just made it to the top of the list for a quick crochet fix. I ended up winging it and not following the pattern. I wish that all patterns would tell you it the chain 3 did or did not count as first dc. I also made the "eraser" and the "metal band" different widths too. Overall, I'm pleased with how it turned out.

It's great here today. The weather is a bit cooler and we actually turned off the a/c and opened the windows and doors. The garden didn't do too well this year because of the heat. DH watered the heck out of it but it still seemed to "cook" most of the garden. I'm still getting some tomatoes but that's about all.

I've been delaying starting my wearable project. For one thing, I didn't realize how much yarn that a sweater took. I then started looking at vests and that's where I'm at now. I'll figure something out very soon.

Take care y'all...

Summer Sky Baby Ripple

I finished this last night. The pattern is a freebie from here. This blanket goes with the one in the next picture (you may remember it ) for my cousin's twins due in a couple months.

I started and ended with 5 rows of color A (blue/green). 2 rows of color B (multi/cream) between colors A and C. Color C ripples are 3 rows (yellow/pink). I listed the first colors as "boys/girls." I enjoyed making this blanket. It just takes a bit longer since it is all single crochets.

Moving on to my first real wearable...
