Monday's Good Stuff (07 October 2019)

Hello Everyone,

There is still enough time to do some Christmas crocheting. I found an adorable pattern for an elf. This pattern comes to us from the Amidorable Blog. The completed project would look nice sitting on a shelf or fireplace mantle during the holidays. I haven't gotten in the Christmas spirit the last few years so I am hoping that this year I will find the spirit and do some decorating and baking. I did a bit of Christmas shopping online last night so there might be hope for me yet. 😉

Have a great week.

Hugs,

Sharon

Monday's Link to Free Crochet Pattern (03 November 2014)

It's that time of year again. Crafty folks are busy making gifts and decorations for the holidays. For the next few weeks, I'm going to be posting some links to free patterns of little decorative items that you can make as you watch your favorite shows in the evenings. One of today's pattern is for a cute Christmas stocking  that can be used on your Christmas tree or perhaps on a gift.

Another cute decorative item is this pattern for a Santa ornament. This too, can be used as an ornament on your tree or as a special touch on a gift.

Here's a cute stocking that can be used to stuff with a small gift or as a decoration on a larger Christmas package.

This is it for now folks.

Hugs,
Sharon

A Time for Remembering...

pow/mia graphicflag at half-mast

Memorial Day is a time to remember those who have gone before us; the military who stood tall ready to protect us and for some their loved ones who have passed on. Traditionally Memorial Day in the U.S. was celebrated on May 30th and called Decoration Day. It was a day to decorate the graves of our fallen heroes. Now it falls on the last Monday in May and we use it more for the first camping trip of the year, the first cookout, picnic or vacations and swimming pools open for the season. As you raise your cup to toast the opening of the season, remember those who gave all so that you might have your life and freedom.

For me, Memorial Day always brings my brother to mind. He was born on May 30th--the traditional date for Memorial Day (date didn't vary then). He means so very much to me. We have disagreements and sometimes fallings-out but he's still my brother and he is always in my heart. Here's an early happy birthday greeting Little Brother!

Summer is Just about Here...

Summer is just about here. Memorial Day weekend has always been special in our family. First off, my baby brother was born on the traditional day to celebrate Memorial Day--May 30th. Happy birthday little brother! Another thing that many of you in my age category may recall, on Memorial Day we could start wearing our white shoes again! For you younger folks, white shoes were taboo except for between Memorial Day and Labor Day. I don't know why, that's just the way it was. Memorial Day was the start of summer fun--school was almost out, the cold weather was gone and it was time to cut loose and have a bit of swimming. I'm going to take a break starting tomorrow for about a week and a half and visit some of my good friends from my younger days. Things have been happening at home that have me big time stressed but I won't bother all of you about them. Let's just say this jaunt is what the doctor orders. My crochet hook and yarn are packed and ready to go! Any of you have special plans for this weekend and your summer?

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend and a great summer

Mothers Day 2011--

I had a quiet Mothers Day yesterday. Both sons were working but son #2 did come over on his dinner break to surprise me. Love it when the sons drop in--the fridge gets emptied of the left-overs! :)

Anywho, here's my handsome son #2:

And here are the cute gnomes he and his wife gave me for Mothers Day:

Saint Paddy's Day Greetings!

An Irish saying for my friends and others:

May those who love us love us.
And those that don't love us,
May God turn their hearts.
And if He doesn't turn their hearts,
May he turn their ankles,
So we'll know them by their limping.

Happy Saint Paddy's Day!!!

Another Towel Ring Crocheted and Our Christmas Tree--Finally!!!

One more towel ring finished yesterday. I made it while dh drove me to an appointment in Louisville. This is probably a "spare" gift and will go into my gift drawer. Or, I might give it to a gentleman friend of the family. He's a single guy and this is kinda "manly." ;) I always like to see a man with a dishtowel in his hands lol!

Here's this year's little tree. I can only remember 2 times my entire life that I haven't had a tree to the ceiling. One year I'm not going to go into but the other time was when dh and I had transferred to Hawaii the week before Christmas and were in a hotel room with the kids. I bought one of those small little bitty trees in a pot and did all my Christmas shopping on Christmas Eve--what an adventure that was! We had our Christmas feast at a restaurant and went swimming afterwards. It was really a special time for us and the boys were amazed that Santa Claus had found them so far away from where we had been living.  This little tree will be planted in our yard after the big day. I'm going to dedicate it to the special people in my family who are no longer with us.

No matter your faith and beliefs, may your day be blessed and the New Year too.

Halloween!

Halloween is a fun time of the year. What a better way to celebrate than to gorge on candy especially if it is chocolate. Often times, children have no idea of how Halloween celebrations first started. Here's an animated look at the origins of the holiday, its traditions and superstitions related to it. Try to control yourselves, don't be frightened...

Memorial Day--Honoring Our Military Heroes

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service.  It was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states. The South refused to acknowledge the day, honoring their dead on separate days until after World War I (when the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war). It is now celebrated in almost every State on the last Monday in May [passed by Congress with the National Holiday Act of 1971 (P.L. 90 - 363) to ensure a three day weekend for Federal holidays], though several southern states have an additional separate day for honoring the Confederate war dead: January 19 in Texas, April 26 in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi; May 10 in South Carolina; and June 3 (Jefferson Davis' birthday) in Louisiana and Tennessee.  Go to the Memorial Day History page to see the source of this information and read more about this holiday.  Below is a Universal Newsreel that contains one segment about the celebration of Memorial Day in 1945.
