I am actually a day late posting this entry. On March 1st, 1942, the USS Houston CA -30 was sunk by the Japanese. I have a great interest in this battle. As a matter of fact, when I was in college, I wrote my senior thesis on this subject. Go to here to see a website sponsored by the survivors, their families, and other interested parties. It is a very informative site. The survivors went through hell for several years and treatment by the Japanese captors was an extreme example of inhumanity. Our men were starved, beaten, overworked, denied medical care, and murdered. These POWs were the ones whose experiences the movie Bridge on River Kwai was based on. Greetings friends,
Today you are seeing something that you won't see for another 4 years. Nope, it's not all the hoopla surrounding the upcoming elections. It's February 29th! This is leap day. With a rare exception, once every 4 years we have one--February 29th that is.
Before modern calendar-keeping , February 24th was leap day because way back then, February was the last day of the year. This old calendar was the Roman calendar and every few years an extra month was added so that the calendar was in sync with the change of seasons.
Then, in 45 BCE, the Julian calendar was adopted. This meant that an extra day was added at the end of February every 4 years. Nope this isn't quite the modern system of keeping track of days, months and years--but we're getting close.
The "modern" calendar was instituted in 1582 by Pope Gregory. This calendar is know as the Gregorian calendar. He kept with the idea of every 4th year being a leap year but with the exception being that a century year is not a leap year unless it is evenly divisible by 4. Here's a picture of my cute Leslie wearing her new headband I crocheted for her. I had made a different one that I was going to give her but it was too big so I gave it to my dil. My current project is a baby blanket that I am long overdue making for my cousin's baby girl. Since I am so overdue making it I am making it a little larger so that it will be more for a toddler. The colors are kind of off, it is actually a pastel blue and white--2 strands held together. Hope you like it. On this day in history 1945 the United States raised the American flag on Iwo Jima. There were actually 2 flag raisings. The famous picture was actually taken of the second flag raising later that day by Joe Rosenthal of the Associated Press. The first flag raising was of a smaller flag. The American boys had killed about 21,000 Japanese, but suffered more than 26,000 casualties doing so. This would be the only battle in the Pacific where the invaders suffered higher casualties than the defenders

They left behind the Pacific's largest cemeteries: nearly 6,800 graves in all; mounds with their crosses and stars. Hey, I thought I'd show you a completed project. This scarf was sitting in a box for ohh, about 4 years maybe. I put the fringe on it and wove in the lose ends. I still had some yarn left but not quite enough for a hat. So, I went thumbing through my patterns and surfing the web and I came up with this headband. The flower on it I kind of modified from another flower pattern I saw. I'm going to give it a gentle wash and then tuck it away for a present. Maybe for granddaughter for Christmas next year. Hope you like it!
I finished my blue and white round ripple afghan! Yippee! I'll try to make the time tomorrow to take a picture and put it in my blog.
There is a rumor going around that Barrack Obama refused to place his hand over his heart during the Pledge of Allegiance. This is not true. I saw a video where he was questioned about this and he said that it was during the "Star Spangled Banner" that he did not put his hand over his heart. The video is here for those of you who are interested. Nope, I'm not a Democrat and at this point in time he is not my choice for President. I just think that fiction needs to be identified as such. Looks like by the time my state of KY has theirs on 5/20 the decision will probably be made! The next presidential primary for Kentucky (2012) will be in February under new legislation SB 3 that was passed by the Kentucky Senate on January 30, 2007 by a vote of 21-14. Other primaries (in KY) will continue to be held in May. Remember... VOTE!

Here's my 2nd entry for the day. Today I decided to make a sweater for my son's dog, Bubba. I should have checked my gauge before taking the hook to the yarn because the sweater is only a tad bit big on Nellie Belle my chihuahua! Anyway, a girl can never have too many clothes. This one was made out of yarn I got at a thrift store and it kind of looks like a coat for Santa Claus. If you're interested in the pattern, you can find it here. It was very easy to crochet but the assembly was a bit confusing. I'm happy with how it turned out even if it ended up fitting the wrong "kid"!

Thought I'd show you one of my latest WIP. It is a round ripple pattern. I'm using the crochet pattern that Aggie May on crochetville.org generously sent me. This is my 2nd rr using this pattern. It is an easy, and quick pattern. I am using 2 strands of ww yarn--light blue and white in this case. I am making it for my dc (that's cousin, not double crochet--ha ha). I am addicted to this pattern. Well, becoming addicted is probably a better word since this is only my second one. The first rr I did, I have put away. I am so excited with it that I am trying to figure out how to enter it in the county fair. I haven't posted any pictures of it in case there is some rule prohibiting it before entering it. This is a hat and scarf set I just finished for my DILs mom. The scarf is very simple, 10 sc across with a N-hook. The hat pattern is from Lion's site. It is a freebie and you can find it here . I used the boucle yarn and not homespun. I also decided not to put the flower on the hat because I thought the hat was too much a young girl's hat and not a mature woman's with the flower. I love it! Some of you probably know that I am a substitute teacher. Last week when I was at one of our local high schools I was really disappointed by the actions of some of the students. The morning starts out with announcements and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. About 6 of the students refused to stand, stop talking or recite the Pledge. When I told them that I was disappointed by their actions, one young lady told me that she was an adult and I couldn't tell her what to do. A young man told me that he didn't have any respect for our country and that's why he didn't say the Pledge. OK, I'll be the first one to admit that our country hasn't always done the smartest things and has made many mistakes. I still would not want to live anywhere else! When I mentioned to the department head that someone should talk to the students she said that they were within their rights to not say the Pledge. Well, I shut my mouth. I don't want to be known as a trouble-making substitute teacher. I feel bad for the patriotic students who were being shown disrespect by the talking, laughing and joking students. Here's a picture of my handsome son Matthew modeling his hat that I crocheted for him. It's a very, very simple pattern that you can find here . What I like about it is that it is a "manly" hat that my guys can wear. I carried this project in my purse to work on when I was stuck waiting at appointments and that sort of thing.ps Matt doesn't like this picture because he thinks it makes him look "girlie." I think it makes him look young and that's a good thing! lol!

On this day in history 1977: Gary Gilmore was the first person executed by firing squad in Utah when the ban on the capital punishment was lifted. Gary Gilmore began a career of crime in his early teens. At the age of 14 he was sent to reform school on charges of auto theft. When he was 21 he was imprisoned for assault and robbery. After he was released from prison he murdered one person and most probably a 2nd person but there was a lack of hard evidence. Gilmore was given a sentence of execution; he chose to die by firing squad. Gary Gilmore's final words before being put to death on January 17, 1977, by a volunteer firing squad were -- "Let's do it!" An interesting book I read about this (years ago) was The Executioner's Song by Norman Mailer (ca 1979). A movie has also been made based on this book. I'm feeling rather blah today. Nothing really appeals to me. Maybe I'll do some work on the afghan I'm making. Hmmm, maybe I'll just go take a nap LOL! On this day in history 1128: Pope Honorius II recognizes Knights Templar. If you have read the Da Vinci Code you will probably recall reading about their fictional exploits over and over through out the book. Here's a handy tool for all you crocheters (knitters too). It is a yarn shop locator! Type in a location and a map will show you places to buy yarn! Handy if you're going on a trip and want to scope out yarn shops. Surprise, surprise, surprise, in my small town there is a yarn shop and it's NOT Wal-mart! LOL! I almost forgot here it is! UPDATE: The yarn shop in my town no longer exists. This locator had outdated information.
Go over to Happy Yellow House and check out the new patterns. There is an adorable duffel bag made out of daisy squares. There are new afghan patterns too. I just love the afghans here. One of these days I'm going to attempt one of them. So many patterns, so little time! Have fun!

Yippee!!! I did it! The chenille afghan is finished! I have decided to give it to my aunt. She always remembers us at Christmas time so I hope this is a nice gift for her. The pattern was a freebie on the yarn wrapper but it is also free on Lion's website. What do you think of it? Now, I am making a round ripple afghan out of shades of purple from my stash.

I'm still working on the chenille afghan. It is so easy and works up very quickly. I had bought a few extra skeins of yarns "just in case" and what I'm doing is using the extra yarn to increase the edging. The afghan just seemed a bit too small for us --dh is 6'1" and I'm 5'9". Anyway, I'm working with the last skein of yarn so in a few days I'll be able to post a picture of the completed ghan! Yippee! The last ghan I made was granny squares so it seemed to take forever to finish especially when my ADD kicked in! I don't really have ADD--my husband teases me that I do because I tend to flit from one thing to another.

Here's the project that I am working on now. I found some Lions brand quick and easy chenille yarn on sale 1/2 off. I got enough to make a throw to go on the back of the couch. The pattern is available for free here . You have to sign up as a member to see it but it is well worth it. They have many, many very nice patterns for free.
Now for some history trivia.

Thought that I would put a picture here of dh's Christmas present. He was a little skeptical when he heard that I "made" him one of his presents. He really likes this though. I bought a fleece with the USN insignia from Wal-mart and then I did a single crochet edge around it for several rows. I "poked" holes around the perimeter with a seam ripper to start out with. Voila...a great throw for my retired MMCS (SW) navy guy!

Here is my latest finished object. I decided to make a stocking to put my MIL's Christms present in. It took one evening in front of the television to make. I used some odds and ends of yarn. here's the pattern if anyone is interest.

I call this afghan I finally finished "Labor of Love." I worked a little bit here and a little bit there for over a year making it. Weaving those pain-in-the-you-know-where-ends in were detrimental to seeing this thing finished. It is for my younger son and his wife.

On this day in 1911, Elizabeth Jaffray, a White House housekeeper, writes in her diary about a conversation she’d had with President William Howard Taft and his wife about the commander in chief’s ever-expanding waistline. Ms Jaffray was, in her own small way, a controversial figure. She was the first female housekeeper at the White House; previously there were male "stewards." Here are my latest finished projects. A friend asked for a sweater for her dog. I used a Knitwear pattern (or is it knitware?). The slippers I made out of left-over yarn. I'm not 100% happy with the dog sweater. Even though I plugged the dogs measurements in the program the sweater looks a little "odd" to me. Since the fur-baby is on the other side of the country I wasn't able to do fittings. I hope it fits. The colors are for the Minnesota Vikings. I found an extra "bonus" to put in the box. I know that I have already given you two places on the web to go for daily free patterns. Annies Attic is one and the other is Daily Crocheter. The third that I have not told you about is JPFun . With the cost of patterns being kind of high especially if you're a collector/hoarder of patterns like I am it is nice to find some variety in the freebie category.
Sorry that I haven't written lately. I've been shopping around for a new space. I am frustrated that 360 as we know it will be closing. I wonder if it will be a thing like when Yahoo photos shut down and in order to get comparable service with Flickr, there were fees attached. Who knows, we'll see. On this day in history 1764--Abigail Smith married the future President of the United States John Adams. Because of government business this couple was often separated for months and even years. Nevertheless, they were devoted correspondents and often carried on intellectual and stimulating "conversations' through the mail. A famous quote from a letter by Abigail to John is "In the new Code of Laws which I suppose it will be necessary for you to make I desire you would Remember the Ladies, and be more generous and favourable to them than your ancestors. Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the Husbands. Remember all Men would be tyrants if they could. If particular care and attention is not paid to the Ladies we are determined to foment a Rebellion, and will not hold ourselves bounds by any Laws in which we have no voice, or Representation." Crochet update: I've been working on a sweater for my friends furbaby. I'm a bit nervous about it because she sent me some of the new Vannas Yarn and I don't want to "goof." I wish I could do some fittings on the darling but I'll just do my best with the measurements she gave me. I'll try to get a picture tomorrow and post it for you. The pattern I'm using was generated by Knitware but the measurements are way off from what I input.

Hey, I found a really great crochet page. It has crochet pillows shaped like the alphabet! Wouldn't it be interesting to crochet pillows spelling out your child's name and putting them on his/her bed? Here's the link for the patterns.
