I call this afghan I finally finished "Labor of Love." I worked a little bit here and a little bit there for over a year making it. Weaving those pain-in-the-you-know-where-ends in were detrimental to seeing this thing finished. It is for my younger son and his wife.

A Mother's love is something that no on can explain,
It is made of deep devotion and of sacrifice and pain,
It is endless and unselfish and enduring come what may
For nothing can destroy it or take that love away . . .
It is patient and forgiving when all others are forsaking,
And it never fails or falters even though the heart is breaking . . .
It believes beyond believing when the world around condemns,
And it glows with all the beauty of the rarest, brightest gems . . .
It is far beyond defining, it defies all explanation,
And it still remains a secret like the mysteries of creation . . .
A many splendoured miracle man cannot understand
And another wondrous evidence of God's tender guiding hand.

During the American Revolution, George Washington and his men knew no peace or goodwill on Christmas 1776. On Christmas night, they crossed the Delaware River and defeated the British on December 26th at Trenton. Go to this page to read about this gruesome Christmas.

Here is another entry for today:
This work (1862) by artist Thomas Nast depicts a family split apart by the Civil War. The left image shows a scene of a woman, late at night on Christmas Eve, on her knees in earnest prayer; the right side shows the husband out in the field. Go to http://dburgin.tripod.com/cw_xmas/cwarchristmas.html to read more about the Civil War Christmases. Follow the links and you will find even more information.

On this day in history 1767 British passes Townshend Revenue Act levying taxes on America. This act taxed the colonists in order to raise funds to pay the cost of the British military presence in the colonies. To see more go here . Another good article is found here . On this day in history 1765--The Stamp Act went into effect. This was the first direct tax on the American colonies. This act was to generate income to maintain the military presence in the colonies. Maybe we should consider this in Iraq to defray the cost of their defense and rebuilding??? Just an idea for my readers to ponder. The colonists were literally up in arms about this tax. It was the first time they were taxed to raise money. Previously colonists had been taxed to regulate trade. The colonists were taxed on anything that was paper and this even included playing cards. To read this act go here . An interesting article may be found here .

I've made a few of these for Opi and Nellie. They "tolerate" me dressing them up because they know that when Ray sees them he will strip them down. Guy just doesn't have any class allowing our "kids" to run around naked!

On this day in history 1776-- Nathan Hale, a Connecticut schoolteacher and captain in the Continental Army, is executed by the British for spying. A famous quote attributed to Hale is "I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country." The American Revolution web site has a very interesting write up on Hale and contains numerous links to sites on Hale. Please visit here http://www.americanrevolution.com/NathanHale.htm .

Today is a great day--I start work again! I'm going to be substitute teaching for Hardin County Schools here in KY. I really want a full time regular job but this one will at least get my foot in the door so to speak. I have amassed an extensive collection of printed works to supplement classroom instruction if I should ever be fortunate enough to get my own position as social studies teacher. This collection has taken over my family room to such an extent that I've had to get rid of the majority of my works of fiction! Maybe I should take a picture of my collection and post it here. Mmmmm, interesting thought! lol!

Take care all, and I'll let you know later how it went. ---Sharon
