Entry for October 25, 2007
On this day in history 1764--Abigail Smith married the future President of the United States John Adams. Because of government business this couple was often separated for months and even years. Nevertheless, they were devoted correspondents and often carried on intellectual and stimulating "conversations' through the mail. A famous quote from a letter by Abigail to John is "In the new Code of Laws which I suppose it will be necessary for you to make I desire you would Remember the Ladies, and be more generous and favourable to them than your ancestors. Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the Husbands. Remember all Men would be tyrants if they could. If particular care and attention is not paid to the Ladies we are determined to foment a Rebellion, and will not hold ourselves bounds by any Laws in which we have no voice, or Representation." (March 31, 1776) Go to the Massachusetts Historical Society to read the correspondence of this couple. (Originally posted on my Yahoo 360 blog)
