Entry for March 22, 2008
On this day in history 1765 the Stamp Act was passed by Parliament. In November, it was to be instituted. This act imposed a tax on all paper products - legal documents, business records even playing cards and dice in the American colonies. Protecting the colonies was expensive and England needed a source of income to do this. The colonists were incensed by the unfairness. They were to be taxed and did not even have any representative to speak for them! The tax was to be paid in the colonies but NOT in England. To read this act go here . After Benjamin Franklin testified in front of Parliament, this act was repealed..
