On this day in history 1952-- Richard M. Nixon gave the "Checkers Speech." Nixon was running on the Dwight D. Eisenhower ticket as Vice-Presidential candidate. Nixon had been accused of accepting illegal campaign contributions. Nixon admitted that by accepting a dog, Checkers, he could be accused of that but that he was keeping the dog anyway.
