On this day in history 1895-- Booker T Washington delivers "Atlanta Compromise" address. The speech is reportedly one of the most important and influential speeches in American history. Mr. Washington made this address to a predominantly white audience. He urged the whites to hire blacks and not rely on immigrant populations. The blacks were encouraged to seek work in the South and not to seek their futures in the North.
