On this day in 1911, Elizabeth Jaffray, a White House housekeeper, writes in her diary about a conversation she’d had with President William Howard Taft and his wife about the commander in chief’s ever-expanding waistline. Ms Jaffray was, in her own small way, a controversial figure. She was the first female housekeeper at the White House; previously there were male "stewards." You can visit this site to read a short article about Ms Jaffray. To learn more about President Taft's health, go here . (Originally posted on my Yahoo 360 blog)

Here are my latest finished projects. A friend asked for a sweater for her dog. I used a Knitwear pattern (or is it knitware?). The slippers I made out of left-over yarn. I'm not 100% happy with the dog sweater. Even though I plugged the dogs measurements in the program the sweater looks a little "odd" to me. Since the fur-baby is on the other side of the country I wasn't able to do fittings. I hope it fits. The colors are for the Minnesota Vikings. I found an extra "bonus" to put in the box. I hope they like it! (Originally posted on my Yahoo 360 blog)

Here is a scarf I recently finished. I kind of "winged it." I love scarves in the winter. They not only keep me warm they also "dress-up" a plain shirt. (Originally posted on my Yahoo 360 blog)

I know that I have already given you two places on the web to go for daily free patterns. Annies Attic is one and the other is Daily Crocheter. The third that I have not told you about is JPFun . With the cost of patterns being kind of high especially if you're a collector/hoarder of patterns like I am it is nice to find some variety in the freebie category.
Sorry that I haven't written lately. I've been shopping around for a new space. I am frustrated that 360 as we know it will be closing. I wonder if it will be a thing like when Yahoo photos shut down and in order to get comparable service with Flickr, there were fees attached. Who knows, we'll see. I hate to lose everything I've put in here to date. I guess it's a hurry up and wait situation. (Originally posted on my Yahoo 360 blog)

On this day in history 1764--Abigail Smith married the future President of the United States John Adams. Because of government business this couple was often separated for months and even years. Nevertheless, they were devoted correspondents and often carried on intellectual and stimulating "conversations' through the mail. A famous quote from a letter by Abigail to John is "In the new Code of Laws which I suppose it will be necessary for you to make I desire you would Remember the Ladies, and be more generous and favourable to them than your ancestors. Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the Husbands. Remember all Men would be tyrants if they could. If particular care and attention is not paid to the Ladies we are determined to foment a Rebellion, and will not hold ourselves bounds by any Laws in which we have no voice, or Representation." (March 31, 1776) Go to the Massachusetts Historical Society to read the correspondence of this couple. (Originally posted on my Yahoo 360 blog)

This day in history 1720: Birth of John Woolman, American Quaker reformer. His "Journal," written from 1756-72, greatly influenced 19th century abolitionists. Go here to read a short article about him. If you go here you can read his journal. Here you will can read some of his correspondence.

Crochet update: I've been working on a sweater for my friends furbaby. I'm a bit nervous about it because she sent me some of the new Vannas Yarn and I don't want to "goof." I wish I could do some fittings on the darling but I'll just do my best with the measurements she gave me. I'll try to get a picture tomorrow and post it for you. The pattern I'm using was generated by Knitware but the measurements are way off from what I input.

On this day in history 1775 - The Continental Congress establishes a Continental Navy, later known as the U.S. Navy. Hey, I found a really great crochet page. It has crochet pillows shaped like the alphabet! Wouldn't it be interesting to crochet pillows spelling out your child's name and putting them on his/her bed? Here's the link for the patterns.

NOTE: The link for the pillows isn't working. I found a few patterns for letter pillows.

Today I want to post some information for you that can save you a lot of heart ache. Go to the FBIs Crimes Against Children web page for the National/State Sex Offender Registry. Sex offenders come from all socio-economic, ethnic and racial groups. There are female offenders too. Check out these listings. It is even a good idea to check out day care providers because there are many unlicensed providers out there and it is better to be safe than sorry where your children are concerned. In yesterday's first entry I wrote about the possible takeover of our town's wastewater department by an European contractor. I sent copies to the newspaper, mayor and city council. Boy is hubby FURIOUS with me! He is a city worker...therefore I am not allowed to have opinions of my own. My wages are taxed by the city and my name is on this house we're buying here so why can't I have my own opinion? If it is held against him then that is illegal. I do NOT like the town I live in but I should be able to voice my opinion no matter who I am married to. Maybe this will become a better place to live. That's part of a democracy. I'm sorry dear husband that you don't agree with me. I am entitled to my own opinion and I am guaranteed freedom of speech by the First Amendment. Your thoughts are not mine nor are mine yours.
