Fashion and Youth...

Last year, many of the kids at the schools I subbed at were sagging their pants. I think it looks tacky but that's not the reason I am against this style. After all, I don't have to like the various styles of clothing out there but then again I go for clothing that is mix and matchable and stays in style for years like old fashioned straight legged jeans. I don't like sagging because it is in some cases indecent to see someone's behind, underwear or shorts above their britches. My main objection to this style is the safety factor. One day I had a sub job as a P.E. (don't giggle over this) teacher and a kid's pants fell and he tripped on them as they wrapped around his ankles while he was shooting hoops. Luckily, he was able to get back on his feet after this incidence but he could have broken a leg or something in the name of fashion.

This year, there is a new trend and it is to wear skin-tight jeans that I've heard called jeggings and also skinny jeans. Sometimes these jeans are so tight that I wonder if the kids wearing them are having problems breathing.

Or maybe these kids are just using:

Now there are a few kids out there wearing what I call a "hybrid style" jeans. They sag a pair of skinny jeans!

Sagging jeans have become controversial. For a while, rumors were flying that sagging jeans were a prison thing signaling sexual availability. Not so according to Snopes. Many cities and counties have enacted laws making sagging jeans illegal. Some have been challenged and cancelled out but some are still on the books. Go to Google or another search engine and type in "sagging pants laws" and see the huge amount of links to go to and read about this issue.

So, what do you think? Are sagging jeans attractive on young men and women or are they tacky or perhaps indecent?

  1. I can't believe that is what some people call style! It is ridiculous in every way. How could anyone expect any respect dressing in this manner? All these people have to do is to put themselves in a logical serious situation with these pants on (or off,as it seems) and picture themselves being taken seriously.

  2. I think they're both ridiculous. But then I'm an old lady who live in sweats, so whatdoIknow ...

  3. I live in a very diverse metro area. Pretty much, the way a person dresses around here signifies where they're from. The saggy pants are considered "ghetto" and not limited to the youth. Fortunately for everyone else, those folks who sag their pants are respectful enough to wear "tighty whities" under their boxers, so we don't have to look at their butts.

I find many of the extreme versions of today's fashion terribly distasteful. The worst I've seen was the 50-ish y.o. woman who was wearing hip huggers (yeah, showing MY age), sans underwear, so low and tight that her butt cheeks resembled a pair of breasts in a push-up bra. (You're welcome for THAT visual.)

  4. I get a kick out of these kids in their sagging pants. They have to walk around with one hand on their britches, one hand on backpack and it gets really comical when they're trying to hold hands with their sweetie. I'm sounding like my parents' generation in this post--back then it was ragged bottoms on the bell-bottomed jeans, long hair on men and mini skirts that when compared to today's minis were quite modest. Hope y'all are having a great weekend--our temps are supposed to be a heat wave in the 60s!

    ps--I'm an older gal too--53 :)

  5. Every time I shake my head at something I see a teenager wearing I think of my father saying, "WHAT are you wearing?" The sad thing is that around here, the adults wear the same thing (if not worse) and look absolutely ridiculous. And, supposedly, the whole showing your underwear thing is supposedly over. Very few rappers wear that look anymore. I pick on my younger brother whose pants were always falling down...now I tell him he was just ahead of his time.

We've got 50's predicted for the next few days and possibly warmer later in the week... It's a far cry from when I was a kid and the first snowfall was usually on or around Nov. 21. Enjoy that warm weather!

I'm 41 next week and tend toward the more conservative style of a girl brought up in NH.

  6. A friend of mine worked at a prison and said this was how the prisoners wore their pants due to the fact they were not given belts in fear they would hang themselves or someone else.
