My Version of the Holiday Place Mat

I've been in a crocheting slump lately and as a result I have made many granny squares out of odds and ends of leftovers. One day, I started going through some old magazines and found a pattern for a round placemat. I didn't have dk weight yarn that the pattern required but I did have some other worsted weight cotton yarn of various brands. So, I used 2 balls of the purple and 1 skein of the multicolored. There wasn't enough of either color to make the final round so I used some plain white I had on hand. Here's the pic--

I am very happy with how it turned out. I think I will put it on my dining room table soon. It is more of a large doily than a placemat because of the yarn substitution. I am assembling an afghan out of granny squares on the table so I need to get it all put together so I can have my table back. Here's the bibliographic information for this pattern:

Langtange, Anna. "Home for the Holidays Holiday PlaceMat." Crochet World, December 2013, 34-35.

Hope you all are doing ok. The weather here is summery and it feels great to be finished with the cold for a while. Take care everyone.

Granny Mandala is Finished!

I finished the granny mandala that I started last night. I love the colors--reminds me of the 1940s and 50s. The yarns I used are by Peaches and Creme and the colors I used are chartreuse, peace (a multicolor of chartreuse, yellow and red) and a bit of red for the border. There seems to be some activity in the online crochet world where crocheters are making mandalas in memory of Wink who became known for the beautiful mandalas she made.Unfortunately, depression came down extra hard on Wink and she lost her battle with it. In memory of Wink, here's my mandala--

Monday's Link to Free Crochet Pattern (29 June 2015)

I love the look of crocheted doilies. They're pretty and add a lightness to the decor. Today's pattern link isn't for a doily but rather for a doily-ish rug. It is made out of t-shirt yarn but you might be able to "fudge" and use several strands of worsted for a different look. Whatever you do, have fun!

Hugs,
Sharon

This Was a Quick Project

On Mondays, I put a link to a free pattern. This weeks pattern was for a doily out of ww yarn. I had some ww cotton here from Hobby Lobby so I thought I'd give it a whirl. In just a little over an hour, I was finished. I really like this pattern and I think I'm going to make more. Thanks for stopping in.

Here's a cute doily made from yarn for those of you (like me) who like doilies but find the thread hard to work with.

Getting Back on Track With Magic Ball Afghan, Finishing up Doily and Getting Ready for Next Project...

Yesterday, I had doctor appointments in Louisville, about an hour from here. When I go there I have the opportunity to to stop at Hobby Lobby. Yesterday I got the black yarn to finish my magic ball afghan. I also got red yarn to use in a spiderman ghan for a friend's little boy. The ww acrylic blues they had just didn't look right so I stopped at Meijers on my way home and they had a good blue color by Bernat. I was a naughty girl at Hobby Lobby and splurged on a few bamboo handled hooks. I love my J-Hook with a bamboo handle so I thought I'd try some others. No good sales yesterday though--maybe that is good because I impulse buy too much on yarn--yarn comes in faster than it goes out lol!

The spiral simplicity doily I'm making for my uncle is coming along. I'm working on the last 2 rounds! YIPPEE! I hope to finish it up this week and get it in the mail to him. Below is a picture of it so far. Definitely needs some blocking when it's finished.

Above is a toddler-sized spiderman ghan I made a couple years ago. The one I'll be starting soon will be a little larger for a little boy in elementary school. I use the round ripple pattern that AggieMay from crochetville generously provides to other members who pm her.

Edited to add doily picture

Need Crochet Motivation...

I  need to get motivated and finish the 2nd doily I'm making for my uncle's new place in Florida.  I'm not too keen on crocheting with thread.  In the meantime, I am working on a "brainless" project--a magic ball afghan.  For this, you just wind up all your scraps of similar yarns, in this case worsted weight acrylic, and crochet a simple pattern using a strand of the magic ball yarn and one other color, I'm using black.  It is so relaxing to just crochet back and forth. I'm doing the following row sequence:  single crochet, half-double crochet, double crochet, half-double crochet, and single crochet.  I'm repeating this sequence until I get to the desired size or run out of magic balls and have to put the project on hold until I have enough scrap yarn to make additional magic balls.  I'm using a J-hook to have a tighter crochet and hopefully warmer ghan.

Until later, stay warm everyone!

First Ever Crocheted Doily Made by Me

I finished crocheting this doily about a week or so ago.  Tonight, I starched it and ironed it to shape.  The pattern was very easy to make.  The problem I had was "seeing" but it did get a little easier as it progressed.  The pattern is called spiral simplicity doily.  I made it for my uncle who requested doilies for the arms of his couch; one down and one to go!  I'm not sure if I used the correct gauge thread because the label was missing when I bought my stash of crochet thread at a thrift store and I really don't know much about crocheting with thread since this is only my 2nd time to ever crochet with it.  Anyway, if you're looking for a simple, not flowery doily to crochet you  might want to consider this one.  Hope you enjoyed looking.  Hugs....
